the dog and partridge, bollington

Arthur Wakefield ran folk clubs in Bollington since the early 1970's after coming to the club run by the Wood Family at the Spinners and maybe also at the Meridian.

He moved into the village in 1975 and began his first club at the Royal Oak a few years later.

After a number of years, the club moved to the Dog and Partridge for the first time. There was a short stint at the Holly Bush before moving to the Bull's Head in Kerridge in the late 70's or early 80's. The club then returned to the Dog and Partridge in the mid 80's. Legend has it that all of these moves were as a result of various disagreements with the landlords at these establishments - who knows?.

Anyway, in 2012, after nearly forty years or so of running folk clubs in the village, Arthur finally decided to take a back seat from the general running of the club. A retirement singers night took place on November 9th 2012 which reunited him with old friends such as the Wood family,Tony Downes and Stanley Accrington.

He passed away in a care home on 21st May 2020. But the club is still here at the Dog and Partridge and it is going full steam ahead with Pete Wood at the helm. (Taken from the folk club's own website)
